Speaking Activities for ESL Students

Get your ESL students speaking in the classroom. These new group activities for English language learners focus on providing teachers with ready-made materials for speaking practice in the classroom. Encourage your students to use their new language skills in real world scenarios. Practicing speaking skills in the ESL classroom can build your students’ confidence and improve their success when employing these skills outside of the classroom. The speaking activities can be used as a standalone lesson or as a piece of a larger module.

Free ESL Speaking Materials

FLOW Speak understands how difficult it can be to find prepared speaking lessons for ESL classrooms. To assist teachers in lesson planning and encourage more ‘Student Talk Time’ in the classroom, FLOW Speak offers free ESL teaching materials that focus on conversation skills. These group activities focus on topics ideal for adult and young adult English language learners. In addition to engaging students in conversation, these activities focus on real world skills and situations to prepare students for future use of their new language.

Group Activity: Problems at the Airport

Prepare your intermediate English students for air travel through this ESL role-play activity. In small groups or as a class, students will practice addressing common problems or concerns that may arise while traveling by plane. This activity provides students with the opportunity to practice real world situations in the safety of the classroom, reinforcing vocabulary and topics related to air travel.

As noted by the CEFR level, students with B1 in their target language should be able to handle most situations that they encounter while traveling in a country where this language is spoken. Practicing language specific to travel and common travel problems will help students achieve this competency.

How to Implement ‘Problems at the Airport’ Activity

Engage your students in conversation practice as they learn to solve common travel problems encountered at the airport. Students will role play as the traveler and the customer service agent to discuss issues such as lost luggage, boarding pass misprints, flight delays, and more. This lesson is aimed at CEFR B1 students and can be delivered as part of a larger unit about travel. Teachers can implement this as a whole class activity or divide the students into smaller groups.

In the teaching materials available for download, detailed instructions for teachers and prompts for students are included. The ‘Teacher Instructions’ provide information on delivery, necessary materials, enabling objectives, and possible homework. The homework suggests three related FLOW Speak lessons to be assigned for individual speaking practice. This can reinforce the topics discussed in class. The lessons related to ‘Problems at the Airport’ include the ‘Lost Luggage’ Conversation Lesson, the ‘Flight Delay’ AI Talk Lesson, and the ‘Changing Flights’ AI Talk Lesson.
